Home CCTV Systems – What to Look Out For and Which Are The Best?
Security at home is one of the most important factors to consider in your life. It is where your family sleeps. Where you keep your prized possessions. Where you park your new car. Home CCTV systems can protect all of the things you hold dear.
Home security is not a matter to be taken lightly. But where do you start with all of the products out there?
In this article we take a look at five of the latest and best home security products on the market today and things to look out for when buying a home security system.
Things to Consider When Buying Home Security Systems
There are many things to think about it when it comes to buying CCTV cameras for your house.
What is the resolution of the security cameras? Most CCTV installation companies offer HD and full HD cameras these days and either way you will pretty much get crystal clear footage in clear conditions.
You then have to think about night vision cameras. These have to be mounted outside as they use infrared sensors which reflect against windows. Most burglaries happen after dark so make sure you get night vision CCTV.
You will also want to be able to access the live feed of your surveillance cameras via your mobile devices. Furthermore, make sure you get cameras that give you a notification on your mobile devices if they detect movement.
This brings me onto motion sensor cameras. Rather than having your cameras record at all times which drains battery life and uses plenty of wifi data, you can get motion detector cameras that only record when movement is detected.
Some cameras have what’s called a ‘pan tilt swivel’ feature where you can actually control the movement of the camera in real time.
Without a doubt the coolest aspect of modern day home CCTV cameras is the two way audio feature. This lets you listen in to your home in real time and also gives you the ability to speak into your home via the security system. This is great to startle would be intruders but can also be used to tell off the dog for chewing your favourite shoes!

For your peace of mind, this review is completely impartial and we have not received any money or products from the companies listed below:
In no particular order, here is a list of the top 5 home CCTV systems in the UK right now:
Rating: 4.5 stars
The Netatmo Presence has got to be the best looking CCTV camera on the market. Not only does it have a sleek design but it also has lots of great features. The app works really well and is easy to use. It has a very bright LED floodlight built in which can be controlled remotely by a slider on your mobile device.
With built in motion detection you can receive notifications straight to your phone or tablet if thre’s an intruder.

The Y-Cam Evo is an indoor CCTV camera that’s part of Y-Cam’s HomeMonitor range. It’s really small and has a great features that make this camera easily one of the top 5 home security cameras.
Like previous Y-Cam HomeMonitor cameras, the Evo comes with free cloud recording that stores 7 days of footage free of charge. This is rolling so each week the previous week of fooage will be deleted and replaced with the new video.
One slight problem with the Evo is that it only records when it detects motion but to be fair when else do you need to record?
The evo comes with a metal stand that can be screwed to a wall and it is magnetic so you can just take it on and off the stand with ease.
As the Y-Cam Evo comes with Bluetooth you can do the whole setup of this indoor cctv camera from your mobile phone. It is really easy to do as well.
The best feature about the Y-Cam Evo is that it has 2-way audio so you can hear what’s going on and talk through it.
For the price of just £129.99 I think this camera is a bargain. For me the best indoor CCTV camera on the market at the moment.

The Ring Smart Doorbell is a great invention and basically lets you see when somebody rings your doorbell. When your doorbell is pressed you receive a notification on your phone or tablet which allows you to view your front door through the in-built camera and also interact with them via a 2-way audio function.
It certainly isn’t a subtle device. It has a ring of LED lights around the button and an obvious camera staring back at you so it won’t be fooling anyone but it’s really good for if you are waiting on a delivery.
As it is a fairly expensive bit of kit they can be prone to being stolen. So that people aren’t put off by this Ring offer a free replacement on broken and stolen devices for life.
Weight 635g, Dimensions 126.4 x 61.7 x 22.1mm, 180-degree FOV, 720p HD camera, Night vision mode, Motion detection, Smartphone alerts, Two-way communication system, built-in 5200mAh battery, Cloud storage optional.

The Y-Cam Outdoor HD Pro is an outdoor, weatherproof security camera. It comes with unlimited free cloud storage which can save you a small fortune in the long run. It also means that if your camera is stolen you will still have the footage safe and secure.
It is relatively easy to install and comes with all the parts required to set the camera up yourself even if you’re not a DIY expert.
The Y-Cam Outdoor HD Pro sends instant notifications when motion is detected and this feature works really well.
You can stream the CCTV footage live on your mobile device using the easy to use app. To be fair, the footage can be around 3-4 seconds behind but this isn’t really going to cause you any major problems.

The Nest Cam Outdoor is an outdoor security system with lots of great features. It is completely weatherproof so will keep the rain, sleet, snow and even really hot weather from ruining your home security. It is also dust proof.
It is incredibly easy to set up and comes with all of the kit required to mount it wherever you like. Again, you don’t need to be a home improvement specialist to get going with the Nest Cam Outdoor.
It also has 2-way audio so that you can ward off would be thieves but also speak to the delivery man if you aren’t around to take the parcel.
It also has good footage resolution at a standard 720p but can be set at 1080p if required.
The main problem with this Nest CCTV camera is that it is heavily reliant on a costly Nest Aware subscription. This is the cloud storage feature from Nest and it can set you back up to £24.00 per month.
If you opt not to take the Nest Aware subscription, you get basic motion alerts, you can save photos of activity for three hours, and you can watch the live stream. The camera has no ability to save video to a different location, such as a USB etc. With the lack of features, not subscribing to Nest Aware makes the Cam Outdoor seem, well, pointless.
3mp sensor with 8x zoom, 720p/1080p, 130-degree FOV, 8 x IR LED for night vision, Speaker and microphone (2-way audio), IP65 rating, AC adaptor input: 100–240 V AC, 50/60 Hz, 0.2 A, AC adaptor output: 5 V DC, 1.4 A, Camera input: 5 V DC, 1.0 A, 128-bit AES with TLS/SSL, Weight 313g.
